Wounded Fort Worth officer suffers medical setback

The Fort Worth officer injured in a shootout one week ago now faces a medical setback.

An update from Officer Matt Pearce's wife, Laura, on Tuesday said Pearce had to go into emergency surgery after an abdominal incision ripped open during a coughing fit.

Laura said Pearce will likely be sedated again and that the incision will be left open with a wound vac for one or two days.

“Pray for infection to stay away and the doctors will be able to close his belly without further complications,” Laura said in a statement released through Fort Worth PD.

The setback came just a day after good news -- that Pearce opened his eyes, spoke and moved around a bit in his hospital bed.

Pearce was shot five times last Tuesday while chasing a fugitive and his son. Ed Mciver Sr. was killed in the return fire and his 21-year-old son, Ed Mciver Jr., is now facing several charges including attempted capital murder.

Pearce remains hospitalized at JPS Hospital in Fort Worth.
