5 hurt after gun goes off while authorities break up Forney crowd of 100+
FORNEY, Texas - Forney authorities say an officer, a deputy and 3 juveniles were hurt in the aftermath of a fight breaking out in a crowd of more than 100 young people.
What We Know:
Kaufman County sheriff’s deputy, Forney police and Forney ISD police all responded to reports of a large fight on Falcon Way and Jersey Lane on Thursday afternoon.
The sheriff’s office says one of the officers was attacked by someone in the gathering and tried to take out their gun. At some point, the gun went off, striking the street and scattering bullet fragments into the crowd.
In total, the sheriff’s office says five people were hurt by shrapnel: a deputy, a Forney ISD officer and three juveniles. The sheriff's deputy and juveniles were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The school officer refused further treatment.
While the fight happened near North Forney High School, the gathering was not school-related.
A Forney ISD spokesperson said it was "after hours, off-site and not a school incident." They also clarified that the school officer was only responding to a request for backup.
Forney police have only confirmed that they assisted the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office respond to a "scene."
What We Don't Know:
Investigators haven't specified whose gun went off, but a Forney ISD spokesperson said that "no Forney ISD officer discharged a weapon." Texas DPS troopers are handling that part of the investigation.
The Kaufman County Sheriff's Office is investigating the fight itself. They have not said what led up to the fight or if any arrests will be made.
It's unclear if the three injured juveniles are Forney ISD students or how old they were.
Forney is located in Kaufman County, about 25 miles east of Dallas.
