Sunday morning fire damages Kaufman County church

COLLEGE MOUND, Texas - A church in Kaufman County, southeast of Dallas, was damaged by a weekend fire.

The Blackjack Baptist Church is located about 11 miles northeast of Kaufman. Someone passing by spotted it burning around 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

The College Mound and Elmo fire departments found heavy smoke coming from the sanctuary.

The fire appears to have started behind a stage in the building. It was quickly put out and crews were able to save some of the church’s audio equipment and memorabilia.

A firefighter suffered dehydration and was treated on the scene. No one else was hurt.
