Hometown Hero: Micah Pinson
13-year-old Micah Pinson loves playing football and basketball. What's remarkable is that he was born without three fingers on his left hand.
When he was 6 weeks old, Micah had surgery at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children to remove webbed skin and to help him have function in his hand. When he was 7, Micah really wanted to give back to the hospital that has given him so much.
In 2011, Micah started a toy drive for the patients at the hospital. He knows that toys are great medicine that comfort scared kids. Businesses and organizations were asked if they'd collect toys for the hospital in a donation box. Now, there are 125 donations boxes in Dallas, Denton, Tarrant, Collin and Rockwall counties for Micah's Toy Drive.
This year, he'll donate 12,000 toys. So far, the total of donated toys is 25,000. Patients and their siblings get the toys at Christmas and all through the year.
When Micah turns 18, he'll no longer be a patient at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. He hopes to find another patient who'll not only keep the toy drive going but help it grow.
