A 7-year-old boy who was walking to the bus stop in Dallas Monday morning was hit by a car.

The accident happened around 7 a.m. near the intersection of Skillman Street and Audelia Road. Police said the boy and his 11-year-old sister tried to cross the busy road outside of a crosswalk to get to a bus stop on the way to school.

“They made it to the center median. They all waited there and then the 7-year-old decided to run out into the roadway at which time the driver of a Mercedez struck the child,” said Sgt. Warren Mitchell with the Dallas Police Department.

The driver stopped and called for help. Police do not believe she was at fault and called it a horrible accident.

“She was not speeding. Speed was not a factor in this accident. So it was just the kids should have been crossing at the crosswalk,” Sgt. Mitchell said. “She was very distraught. She happens to be a school teacher herself and so it was very emotional for her.”

The child was airlifted to the hospital in very critical condition.
