Winter Weather Advisory extended for parts of North Texas
Parts of North Texas are under a winter weather advisory now through the overnight due to the threat of icy road conditions.
Before temperatures dropped Tuesday afternoon, thunderstorms rolled through the area and dropped some pea-sized hail and heavy rain in several counties.
Collin, Cooke, Denton, Fanin, Grayson, Montague, Parker, and Wise counties are under the advisory until 2 a.m. Wednesday morning, The overnight low is expected to be below freezing at 29 degrees.
Accumulations are expected to be less than a tenth of an inch, the National Weather Service said.
As a precaution, TxDOT crews pre-treated roads in Denton County and other western areas before the wet weather arrived.
“Crews are scheduled to come in or are out right now monitoring the bridges and overpasses. They're the ones that ice over first, not insulated by the ground in some cases,” said TxDOT spokesman Val Lopez.
TxDOT also added pre-treating crews midday Tuesday after the forecast shifted slightly east and put Collin County under the advisory.
“Usually we have a little more lead time but there was that little shift in the forecast, so we did have to scramble a little bit,” said TxDOT spokesman Ryan LaFontaine. “But we were able to get our guys in here, crews that will be working overnight tonight and pre-treating. "
Soccer games in Alvarado ISD, Carroll ISD, Corsicana ISD, Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD, Lake Worth ISD, Rockwall ISD and White Settlement ISD were all postponed ahead of the winter weather.
A Winter Weather Advisory means periods of freezing rain could cause travel difficulties. Drivers should be prepared for slippery roads, slow down and use caution while driving. The biggest impacts will likely be on bridges, overpasses and less used side roads.
Temperatures will slightly warm up on Wednesday with a high of 56 degrees.
