Jerry Jones: Romo out for rest of season with hairline fracture
ARLINGTON, Texas — Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has suffered a hairline fracture and will be out for the remainder of the season, owner Jerry Jones said Friday.
Romo was knocked out of the game against Carolina on Thursday with an injury to the shoulder that sidelined him for seven games this season.
Romo, who threw three interceptions and had two of them returned for touchdowns, stayed down in the field after he was sacked by linebacker Thomas Davis on the final play of the third quarter Thursday in the Cowboys' 33-14 loss to the undefeated Panthers.
Romo was favoring his left shoulder as he walked off the field Thursday.
The Cowboys (3-8) lost all seven games that Romo missed with a broken left collarbone before winning in his return at Miami last week. He was already having a rough game, going 11 of 21 with 106 yards with a 27.2 passer rating.
Romo was replaced by Matt Cassel, who started four games in his absence.
Carolina linebacker Luke Kuechly intercepted two straight passes by Romo, returning the first 32 yards for a touchdown and a 20-3 lead late in the second quarter.
Safety Kurt Coleman picked off Romo's second pass of the game and took it back 36 yards for a score.
The Cowboys were trailing 30-6 after Cam Newton's 4-yard touchdown run when Romo was hit by the blitzing Thomas and went down on his left shoulder. It was eerily similar to the injury he sustained in Week 2 against Philadelphia.
Romo went on injured reserve with a designation to return, and the Cowboys couldn't win without him. Brandon Weeden was 0-3 filling in before Cassel lost all four of his starts.
