Jason Witten on coaching in the NFL: 'The time is not now'
Jason Witten on why he's not on Cowboys coaching staff
Former Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten talks with Mike Doocy about why he did not make the highly-anticipated move to the Cowboys' coaching staff and his future coaching goals.
DALLAS - Former Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten will not be a member of Brian Schottenheimer's staff this year despite rumors that he would be.
Witten spoke with FOX 4's Mike Doocy about his coaching future, the Cowboys' new hire and the possibility of being inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Jason Witten: Not the right time to join Cowboys staff
Owner Jerry Jones has strongly suggested that he would love Witten on the Cowboys coaching staff and could see the former tight end being the team's head coach one day.
Witten is currently the head coach at Argyle's Liberty Christian and has won two consecutive state titles.
On Super Bowl Sunday, Witten said the timing wasn't right with his son still attending Liberty as a high school junior.
What they're saying:
"The time is not now. I'm just enjoying what I'm doing right now and coaching my kids," said Witten. "There will be opportunities there for me. When those times present themselves and when I'm ready I think it will be a good opportunity for me to get back in it."
Witten says coaching in the NFL is a desire of his, but right now he's happy with what he's doing.
"I'd love to do it with the Cowboys, but sometimes it doesn't always work out that way. You have to be able to go other places," said Witten. "If you do a good job, when the timing is right I think it would be a good opportunity for me to go, but right now I'm really enjoying what I'm doing with my kids."
Witten on Schottenheimer hire
The Cowboys hired former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to be the team's next head coach.
Schottenheimer has not been a head coach in the NFL before.
Witten says he's excited to see what the new coach has to offer.
What they're saying:
"I think it's a great opportunity for him. I know they are working hard to put together a great staff around him. I always will support whoever is running the show over there," said Witten.
Witten on Hall of Fame
Witten will be eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2026.
He is the all-time leader in receptions and yards for a Cowboys pass catcher.
Witten is also second-all time in receiving yards for a tight end.
What they're saying:
"I'm excited, I'm honored to be even mentioned," said Witten.
