Doocy: McCarthy paying for 'sins' of previous Dallas Cowboys coaches

The Dallas Cowboys will not be bringing back head coach Mike McCarthy after his contract expires on Tuesday.

Jerry Jones confirmed on Monday that the team and McCarthy would be heading in different directions.

Mike Doocy Reacts to Cowboys-McCarthy Split

FOX 4's Mike Doocy says he thought McCarthy would be out after the season, but began to question things in recent weeks as Jones continually praised his now former head coach.

McCarthy also began talking differently late in the season, bringing up his history as a winner.

Jerry Jones on Mike McCarthy departure: 'Different direction' better for both sides

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones released a statement on Monday afternoon about the decision to move on from Mike McCarthy as the team's head coach.

The ex-Cowboys coach has a new agent, Don Yee, who represents several of the most respected head coaches in the league, including Sean Payton and Jim Harbaugh.

Doocy says, ultimately, he believes Jerry Jones is getting what he wants through this departure.

"I don't think Jerry wanted to out-and-out fire Mike McCarthy because I think he respects McCarthy as a coach. I think he likes him as a person. I think they work pretty well together all things considered. " said Doocy. "I think Jerry knew he couldn't sell bringing Mike McCarthy back. That didn't have the sizzle that he needed to keep the interest up."

While overall, it appears the Dallas Cowboys fanbase is in favor of the move, despite three 12-win seasons from McCarthy.

"Bottom line, he didn't win in the playoffs. He was 1-3 in the postseason, so that wasn't good enough. I think McCarthy pays for the sins of his predecessors the previous 25 years who had also failed by in large in the postseason," said Doocy.

McCarthy leaves Dallas as the third-winningest head coach in Cowboys history, behind Tom Landy and Jason Garrett.

What's Next For Mike McCarthy?

Earlier this month, the Cowboys denied a request from the Chicago Bears to allow McCarthy to interview for the open head coaching job.

Presumably, the Bears would still like to have that conversation.

The Saints, where McCarthy once served as an offensive coordinator, could also be an option.

Cowboys head coaching candidates

The names you can expect to hear most often around the open Cowboys coaching job would be current Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and wild card Deion Sanders from Colorado.

The Dallas Cowboys are in the market for a new head coach. Here are some names you should know.

"If [Jones] wants to create a buzz, it's hard to imagine another way to create a huge buzz in the way that Deion would," Doocy said.

The sticking point there could be Sanders' desire to coach his son, Shadeur, who will be drafted this year.
