Work begins on second Dallas deck park over I-35
DALLAS - Workers break ground Wednesday on a big construction project to widen a busy interstate. The Southern Gateway Project also bring a second deck park to Dallas.
In a few years, the area just south of Interstate 35 near the Dallas Zoo will look very different with a deck park like Klyde Warren Park right over the interstate.
But the deck park is just one part of the Texas Department of Transportation's $666 million, 11-mile expansion project designed to provide congestion relief. Reversible non-tolled express lanes will be added to I-35 for all drivers to use.
As for the park, it will include six acres of green space, a children’s garden, water features, arts, a dog park and a pavilion for concert and other events. The hope is that it will revitalize the neighborhood that surrounds it.
Although TxDOT is in charge of the overall project, the city of Dallas will design and manage the park. It is expected to be complete in three years.
