Wildfire burns 800 acres in Palo Pinto County
MINERAL WELLS, Texas - An 800-acre fire in Palo Pinto County is still out of control.
The Surprise Fire is burning west of Mineral Wells and east of Possum Kingdom Lake. It's about 70 miles west of Fort Worth.
About a dozen homes were threatened at one point Monday. Firefighters were able to save them. Highway 180 was also shut down near Mercer Road because of the fire.
The Texas A&M Forest Service is helping to fight the fire with air tankers. But because of the wind and dry conditions, officials say it is only about 10 percent contained.
No injuries have been reported.
The Palo Pinto County judge has issued a disaster declaration and emergency seven-day burn ban to try to prevent additional fires. The ban includes personal fireworks.
