Trump, Harris visit swing states after debate

New polling data shows Vice President Kamala Harris has slightly increased her lead over former President Donald Trump following Tuesday night’s debate.

The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, which closed Thursday, shows Harris leading Trump 47% to 42% in the 2024 presidential election – just slightly higher than the four-point lead she had in a late August Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Among likely voters who watched or read about the debate, 53% said Harris won and 24% said Trump performed better. One in five Republican voters said Trump didn’t appear sharp.

Roughly 53% of Republican voters in the poll said Trump won the debate, compared to 91% of Democrats who said Harris was the winner. According to the poll, 31% of Republicans said no one won and 14% said Harris did better than Trump.

Trump announced Thursday that he would not participate in another debate with Harris, claiming there’s no need because he outperformed Harris on Tuesday. Flash polls and unscientific surveys of who won the debate overwhelmingly favored Harris.

More than 67 million people tuned in as Harris pressed a forceful case against the former president with jabs at his economic policy and his refusal to concede his 2020 election loss.

Trump continued to drive his message about inflation and immigration hammering Americans, tearing into Harris as too liberal and a continuation of Biden's unpopular administration.

Arizona
