Reports say the Dallas Cowboys have discussed its head coach opening with current University of Colorado coach Deion Sanders.

The news broke on the same day that it became official that Mike McCarthy would not be getting a new contract with the Cowboys.

What they're saying:

"To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing. I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up, and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community," Sanders told ESPN on Monday night, according to Adam Schefter.

What the Cowboys are looking for in a coach

What We Expect:

The Dallas Morning News' David Moore talked about the new Cowboys opening and what Jerry Jones is looking for.

In the past, Jones has talked about the learning curve that comes along with being a new head coach.

Moore says while hiring a candidate without any NFL coaching experience is a possibility, it would be a major hurdle.

"I don't think that's his first choice. I think it is someone who has won in this league before," said Moore.

Does Deion Sanders fit with the Cowboys make sense?

Sanders only coached at the collegiate level, posting a 13-12 record at Colorado and a 27-6 record at Jackson State.

Moore calls Jones and Sanders "birds of a marketing feather," but questions if each would be okay with sharing the limelight.

Michael Irvin, Sanders' former teammate, previously hinted that he planned to talk to Jerry about hiring Coach Prime for the Cowboys' job.

It is also in question if Sanders would be interested in coaching in Dallas.

Deion has said in the past that he would not go to the NFL, but said he would be intrigued by the chance to coach both of his sons.

Quarterback Shadeur Sanders is expected to be a top pick in this year's draft.

Safety Shilo Sanders could be a late round pick.

If the Cowboys were to hire Sanders, he would have to be bought out from his Colorado contract.

Sanders' buyout is currently set at $8 million.

Did Deion Sanders play for the Cowboys?

Sanders played for the Cowboys from 1995 to 1999 and has a strong relationship with Jerry Jones.

The cornerback played on the Cowboys' last Super Bowl team in the 1995-1996 season.

In the five years with Dallas, Sanders was named to the Pro Bowl four times.
