Wet weather doesn't dampen Arlington ISD's back-to-school kickoff

Saturday’s rain didn’t stop thousands of Arlington students from attending the annual Arlington ISD Back to School Kickoff.

Umbrella after umbrella were visible as some lined up as early as 5 o'clock Saturday morning. Everyone FOX 4 spoke with agreed, standing in the rain to get free supplies was worth it.

"Education is just #1. the shots, last minute shots like i said. so just still came out for them,” said parent Julia Anguiano.

The event is in its fourth year, made possible by many organizations and businesses within the community, like the Junior League of Arlington and the Dallas Cowboys, which is why the it was held at AT&T Stadium.

AISD says 70% of their students are economically disadvantaged, so help from this even goes a long way. Most students who pre-registered for the event qualify for the free or reduced-price meal program. They also accepted walk-ups on a first come first serve basis.

The district had 10,000 backpacks filled with items to prepare kids for their first day.

Isabel Zamora is going into the 8th grade. She says events like this will help her accomplish her goals.

“I want to graduate middle school and hopefully go to a good high school so that I can get my diploma,” she said.

The back-to-school kickoff also offered an immunization station, vision checks, eyeglass fittings and information on after-school care programs.
