A pair of The Colony police officers can be seen in a tongue-in-cheek video about "cop watchers" who film police activity.
The message is promoting their department's proactive stance on the controversial issue.
The department wants to get in front of any situation where a citizen may be recording them. Their goal is for cops and their watchers to work together.
Each patrol officer will carry cards to give out to cop watchers. It asks them to take some things into consideration, like even submitting their videos to help with investigations.
The cards ask that they don’t show faces or license plates and that they keep a respectable distance. The chief thinks it can actually help solve cases quicker.
The Colony Police Chief David Coulon says instead of fight it and create controversy like other departments have done, he says cop watching is not only OK; it’s encouraged.
“If we did mess up, I want to know about it as soon as possible,” he said. “We will correct it.”
The department created the parody video on Facebook to get the word out about their proactive approach.
Jose Vela from Dallas Cop Block says while he thinks the video is funny, he thinks it doesn't show the seriousness of what they do.
"They're being watched just as they watch us,” said Vela. “It's for police accountability. It’s for transparency of the public."
This comes just months after State Rep. Jason Villalba withdrew his bill that would have made it illegal for people to record law enforcement within 25 feet of police activity.
Police unions criticized it, saying it would give citizens too much freedom.
