Texas State University is investigating the death of a fraternity pledge.
Friends found 20-year-old Matthew Ellis unresponsive at an apartment in San Marcos on Monday afternoon. He died a short time later.
The city says alcohol may have been a factor in his death -- but are waiting on a toxicology report to be sure. The campus newspaper said Ellis’ death happened the morning after his fraternity initiation. Ellis was a pledge for Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.
Texas State President Denise M. Trauth said she was "deeply saddened" by Ellis' death and was suspending all fraternity and sorority activities at the school as a result.
"These chapters are prohibited from holding new-member events, chapter meetings, social functions, and philanthropic activities until a thorough review of the Greek Affairs system is completed," she said in a statement.
