Suspect shot while attack deputy, officials say

What we know:

A mental health warrant was issued for 19-year-old Christopher Loyo due to recent erratic behavior. Just days prior, he was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was released on bond.

Tarrant County Mental Health Warrant Deputies went to Loyo's home in the 5600 block of Twin Oaks Drive in Haltom City just before 2 p.m. to serve a warrant.

Loyo confronted deputies with a knife, according to the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office. One deputy was stabbed in the head and received severe lacerations to his hand.

Other deputies at the scene opened fire, killing Loyo. The Tarrant County Sheriff's Office say the shooting saved the life of the deputy.

The deputy who was stabbed was taken to the hospital but is expected to be okay.

What they're saying:

Family members of 19-year-old Loyo identified him as the man killed Friday afternoon. They claimed deputies made a fast and abrupt entry.

"They didn’t talk to him at all. At all," said the man’s brother, Jorge Loyo. "Why? I don’t know. What are the procedures of the Tarrant County deputies? Is that it? Just drag him out?"

Jorge says he went to a judge Thursday, asking for a mental-health warrant. He says his brother was displaying unusual behavior throughout the past week or so.

"He locked himself in his room. He wasn’t eating. He was saying that his food was poisoned," he said. "He doesn’t trust anybody. He was very paranoid."
