Suspect who fired at Lake Worth officers, set off fireworks killed in Fort Worth standoff

A suspected gunman is dead after an hours' long standoff at a Fort Worth home.

It began after police say he fired at Lake Worth officers during a traffic stop and led them on a chase into Fort Worth city limits.

What we know:

Lake Worth police officers were trying to pull a driver over Thursday evening around 4 p.m. when he began shooting at officers and drove off, the department said.

The suspect led police officers on a chase that ended in the 1700 block of Skyline Drive in a Fort Worth neighborhood, just outside the River Oaks city limits.

Police say the suspect then ditched his red pickup truck and barricaded himself in a nearby home.

"I am with my officers at the scene of this incident," posted Lake Worth Police Chief J.T. Manoushagian on X. "The public is safe and so far, all officers are safe. PRAY for a peaceful resolution!"

The chief says there was someone else inside the home at one point, but the suspect later released them.

SKY 4 video shows smoke coming out of the home after the suspect set off fireworks. He threw several fireworks outside at responding officers.

Around 8:25 p.m., investigators say the suspect came out of the home with a gun pointed to his head. Officers pleaded with him to put it down and shot him with "less lethal rounds."

Investigators say the suspect then turned the gun around and shot at officers. Officers returned fire, killing him.

No officers were hurt.

A SWAT team and other agencies also assisted.

The Fort Worth Police Department is now leading the investigation.

What we don't know:

It's unclear which officers returned fire.

It's also unclear who the Fort Worth home belongs to. Chief Manoushagian says the suspect does have some sort of connection to the home, but he's not exactly sure what that connection is.

Police have not released the name of the suspect.
