Suspect in custody after Fort Worth high-speed chase, standoff
FORT WORTH, Texas - A high-speed chase and hour-long standoff ended after Fort Worth SWAT team finally pulled the suspect out of his car.
The whole thing started before 10 a.m. Wednesday as officers were checking on a report of a suspicious person on Mistletoe Drive near Chisholm Trail.
Sgt. Chris Britt with the Fort Worth Police Department said an officer approached the suspect’s red Avenger and knocked on the window. The man appeared to be asleep inside.
“That individual woke up, looked at our officer, put his vehicle in drive and then drove away from the scene and that’s what actually started the pursuit,” Sgt. Britt said.
At one point the chase reached speeds of up to 100 miles per hour on Fort Worth's highways. It slowed down significantly after the suspect’s front passenger tire blew out.
The car eventually stopped on northbound Highway 199 near the Highway 820 overpass. Police surrounded it with their guns drawn but Sgt. Britt said the suspect did not get out.
“Right now our SWAT team is on scene. That individual is stopped but he is in his vehicle still so our officers are just being very careful right now making sure that there is no danger,” he said. "What we're going to try to do is get that individual to safely exit the vehicle with no injuries."
And that’s exactly what happened. SWAT team members approached the car around noon, safely pulled the suspect out and took him into custody. No one was hurt.
Police have not yet released the suspect's name but they said he was wanted for a parole violation out of Tarrant County for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
He also had a felony evading arrest warrant from earlier this year and police believe he may have been involved in another chase Tuesday night.
