Seagoville High School student killed in crash
A Seagoville High School student was killed and another was hurt when their SUV crashed Wednesday afternoon, near the school. Police are trying to determine what led to the accident.
The SUV hit a utility pole, and a parked pickup truck, before landing in the front yard of a home in the 600 block of Netherland Road.
“You could hear somebody flying down the road and then a crash,” said Lyndon Lewis, who lives in the neighborhood.
The crash knocked out power to homes in the area and crews worked late into the night to restore it.
The 19-year-old driver is hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. The passenger, 17-year-old Juan Barrios, was killed.
Dallas ISD says both are students at Seagoville High School.
“Shock, definitely caught off guard, no one goes to work and expects that a student they just saw the day before, or a young person that they know, is going to be gone,” said Andre Riley, Dallas ISD spokesman.
It’s not clear where the students were headed during school hours. Police are trying to determine if speed was a factor in the crash. Police say there is no indication alcohol or drugs were involved.
“For the other students, these are their peers. People they grew up with, that they have fun with and enjoy life with. So, to see that person suddenly removed from their lives, it’s sad and it's heartbreaking,” Riley said.
Grief counselors will be at the campus Thursday morning to talk with students and staff.
