Race to honor memory of slain Midlothian fitness trainer

It's been six months since someone beat a woman to death inside a Midlothian church as she prepared to lead her morning workout class.

Despite many tips, police have no leads for the murder of Missy Bevers. But her family and friends are working to keep her memory alive.

Nov. 5 her friends are putting on a 5k run in Bevers' honor through the Waxahachie Town Square and raising money for the local Boys and Girls Club and the Salvation Army.

Bevers was setting up to teach a fitness class the morning of April 18 at Creekside Church of Christ when the suspect -- seen wearing police gear and with a distinct walk -- attacked her. Bevers died of puncture wounds to the head and chest.

Friends say she simply wanted to help others be their best.

“She's like I don't care what it takes, I'm going to do this,” said Renee Jones, Bevers’ friend. “She found a new light and she found it in herself and so she just wanted to share that with others.”

Jones was Bevers’ Camp Gladiator Director and good friend. The two bonded in their love for fitness, faith and community.

Jones acknowledges that its tough not to have anyone in custody for her friend’s death. But she hopes the race can honor Bevers and help heal the community.

“I think what we really need to do is not be so frustrated with the case but to lift one another up, support the officers, support the detectives,” Jones said. “It feels like this is part of the healing process... Not only is it part of the healing but it keeps her living because this is the work that she did.”
