Police: Flower Mound Marcus High School student brought gun to school

FLOWER MOUND, Texas - A 16-year-old student at Marcus High School in Flower Mound was arrested for bringing a gun to school Thursday.

Flower Mound police said the teen showed the gun to two female students on Thursday morning and those students reported the teen the the on-campus school resource officer.

He was immediately removed from class and officers searched him and found a small-caliber handgun in his backpack. It was not loaded but officers did find ammunition, police said.

The student does not have a disciplinary record with the school or any criminal history.

In a letter addressed to parents, the school said administrators do not believe the student intended to harm anyone on campus.

He is still in police custody and is facing felony charges for possessing a firearm in a prohibited place.

“Because of yesterday’s school tragedy in Florida, we understand there is a heightened sense of concern surrounding this type of situation. Please know, federal law prohibits us from sharing confidential student information, so we cannot speak directly to the consequences the student may face. I want to assure you, if appropriate, the student will face disciplinary action according to our student code of conduct,” Marcus High School said.

Both police and the school praised students for reporting what they saw. The police department said it has tip lines at both high schools Flower Mound so that students can report suspicious activity.

Later on Thursday, one student each at Plano West Senior High and South Garland High School were arrested for bringing a gun to campus 

All of the arrests come the day after a shooting at a South Florida high school left 17 people dead.
