Off-duty NJ cop found shot dead in car

An off-duty Sayreville, New Jersey police officer was found shot dead in his personal vehicle near a former movie theater complex Monday morning.

Sayreville Police Spokesman James O'Neill said the department began investigating at about 7:15 a.m. after being alerted to a report of a body outside the old Amboy Cinemas.

Upon arrival, investigators discovered a black Dodge with a shattered window on its passenger side door with the officer inside.

The cause of death has yet to be determined.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating.

SkyFoxHD was over the scene where several police vehicles surrounded the theater on Route 9 where a tent was placed over a body covered in a bloody sheet. 

Condolences were pouring in for the Sayreville Police Department as word spread of the officer's death.
