2 Mansfield officers hurt; suspect arrested following chase
MANSFIELD, Texas - An 18-year-old is facing charges after allegedly injuring two Mansfield officers and leading police on a chase early Friday morning.
What We Know: A Mansfield police officer spotted a car parked at McClendon Park West just before 1:30 a.m.
Since the park closes each night at 9 p.m., the officer approached the vehicle to investigate. She called for backup after smelling marijuana.
Once backup arrived, officers asked the two people in the car to exit the vehicle.
Police said an 18-year-old female passenger complied, but 18-year-old Diego Battle refused.
There was a brief struggle. The first officer tried to open Battle’s driver-side door just as he put it in reverse, striking the two officers as he drove away.
Other officers chased Battle to his grandmother’s apartment in the 6900 block of Cockrill Hill Road in Dallas. He surrendered about an hour later after talking to a negotiator on the phone.
Battle is now facing charges of aggravated assault of a peace officer and evading arrest. The female passenger was released and not charged.
The first police officer was treated by medics at the scene. The second officer was not seriously hurt.
What We Don’t Know: Police have not yet released Battle’s mugshot.
