Lewisville ISD votes to close 5 elementary schools
LEWISVILLE, Texas - Lewisville ISD’s board of trustees voted to close five elementary schools due to falling enrollment and budget problems.
Parents packed Monday night’s meeting before the vote in an effort to save their schools.
The schools that will close are Owen Elementary, Creekside Elementary, Garden Ridge Elementary, Highland Village Elementary, and Polser STEM Academy.
All of the votes were unanimous except for the closure of Highland Village Elementary, with one board member voting no.
The board also voted on updating school enrollment boundaries.
It’s been the same story at a number of school districts around North Texas. And it’s never welcome news for parents, students, teachers, and support staff at the schools that are affected.
The district is facing a $4.5 million budget deficit and a declining enrollment.
At a school board meeting last month, the trustees heard pleas from parents and some students from two of the targeted schools in a bid to keep them open.
Before the vote, board members addressed the crowd and thanked them for their words and passionate effort in this fight. They acknowledged that this decision was not easy.
Several board members encouraged the crowd that the fight is not over, and it continues in Austin as the new legislative session is set to begin in January.
The closures would take effect for the 2025-2026 school year.
