Hometown Heroes: Dallas Police Choir

In 1983 a group of Dallas Police Officers gathered to sing Christmas carols in the community.  They loved it, their audience loved it and that's how the Dallas Police Choir was born.

Today, 24 full time, reserve and retired Dallas Police Officers are choir members. They perform dozens of times a year. There's no singing test. Membership is open to any officer on the force. But this volunteer duty requires dedication.

The Dallas Police Choir practices for one hour every Tuesday. Some Officers are working then, others have the day so they make the time to make rehearsal work.

The officers sing patriotic, religious and fun songs in beautiful harmony. They've performed in Washington, D.C., and for big events for the Dallas Cowboys and the Dallas Mavericks. They also sing at funerals to honor fallen Dallas police officers and comfort their families. I covered them at Long Creek Assisted Living and Memory Care in Sunnyvale, and the residents loved the officers.

The Dallas Police Choir has been invited to sing at the World Police Choir Music Festival in Amsterdam next year. They'll hold fundraisers to make that trip.

If you'd like to make a contribution to help them get there and if you'd like to have them come sing for your community event, call Officer Anna Kubeer at (214) 432-4540 or email anazogini.kubeer@dallascityhall.com.
