Fort Worth leaders to vote on short-term rental ordinance

The Fort Worth City Council will consider a new ordinance to regulate short-term rentals. FOX 4's Hanna Battah has a look at the plan.

Leaders in Fort Worth signed off on new regulations for short-term rental properties, including those through companies like Airbnb and VRBO.

The city council approved an ordinance Tuesday requiring short-term rental property owners to register with the city.

The council has been considering new regulations for a while after noticing some short-term rental properties popping up in unauthorized areas. They’ve also received complaints from those who live near the houses.

The new ordinance adds a yearly fee for rental operators and requires guests to pay the same kind of tax they would pay at a hotel.

No more than 12 people will be able to stay at the property at once and only on-site parking will be allowed. Events and parties will be banned.

The property’s registration could be revoked based on violations.

People who rent to guests argued the added regulations will be too costly.

City staff will mail property owners and give them a registration deadline of May 1.
