Fort Worth 71-year-old killed while confronting man stealing from his truck, docs show

Fort Worth police have arrested a suspect who they say killed a man after robbing his truck.

What We Know: Kenyan Buchanan, 33, is charged with capital murder in the death of 71-year-old Roger Smith on New Year's Day.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Smith was leaving a bingo hall on Crowley Road when he confronted Buchanan, who was allegedly stealing items from Smith's truck.

A witness saw Smith fall to the ground and then the suspect fled the scene in a white SUV.

Police were able to get a description of the vehicle based on surveillance video in the area.

On January 3, Fort Worth police pulled over a white Mazda matching the description.

Buchanan was driving the vehicle at the time with a passenger inside.

The passenger told police they were with Buchanan at the time of the shooting.

Buchanan cut his hair after the shooting and learned that Smith had died on the news, the witness told police.

An arrest warrant affidavit shows that Buchanan stole lawn equipment from the truck, as well as Smith's wallet and phone.
