A father and son died after crashing into a tree in the Collin County city of Anna.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the wreck happened around 7:30 p.m. on Highway 121 near Country Road 528.

Witnesses told state troopers the driver of a Chevrolet Camaro tried to pass another car and apparently lost control. The Camaro went off the roadway and slammed into the tree.

Both the driver and his passenger died at the scene. DPS identified them as 34-year-old Chris Perkins and his 8-year-old son, Kylan Krick.

The Whitewright Independent School District said Kylan was a second grader at Whitewright Elementary School.

"He was very sweet and always had a smile. He loved football and he will be missed by all," said Lori Salmond, the school's principal.

Troopers are still investigating the crash.
