Driver dies after shooting at Dallas police, crashing during chase

A man is dead after crashing a vehicle with a stolen license plate while leading Dallas police on a chase and shooting at them, authorities said Friday.

What We Know: Dallas police saw a vehicle with a stolen license plate just before 1 p.m. Friday in the 2900 block of West Camp Wisdom Road.

Officers said they attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle when the driver backed into a patrol vehicle and drove away.

Police said officers did not initially begin a chase, but their helicopter followed the vehicle.

While driving, police said the suspect intentionally crashed into another vehicle, prompting police to initiate a chase.

That's when the driver started shooting at officers, police said.

The chase ended at Second Avenue and Metropolitan Avenue when the driver crashed.

Dallas police said no officers were injured, and no officers fired their weapons.

Following the crash, a passenger got out of the vehicle and was caught by police.

Police said the driver did not exit the vehicle, and it was determined he had injuries.

Friday night, police said the driver died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

What We Don't Know: The name of the passenger taken into custody and the name of the driver who died have not been released.

EDITORS NOTE: An earlier version of this story said the driver was in a stolen vehicle. Police have since clarified that only the license plate on the vehicle was stolen.
