DFW Road Conditions: Be careful on the slushy roads

DALLAS - Only light snow and drizzle are expected in North Texas for Friday morning, but a lot of the roadways are still wet and slushy because of Thursday's storms.

Traffic reporter Chip Waggoner said it's not an ice skating rink out there, but it's still wet, and there are still some icy patches.

"If you are in a low-lying area you can hit a little spot that's kind of pounded, and you can spin out and lose control," he said. "So going too fast on these roads in these conditions can definitely lead to bad things."

Meteorologist Evan Andrews said the precipitation should come to an end on Friday morning and then temperatures will rise above freezing during the day. That will help dry the roads.

But anything that remains will refreeze overnight and still be icy on Saturday morning.

9:30 a.m.

TxDOT spokesperson Kenna Mitchell said her crews have seen a lot of accidents caused by drivers going faster than they should have been.

The department is still in 24/7 operating mode and focusing heavily on the icy bridges and overpasses that have caused problems for drivers on Friday morning.

8:40 a.m.

FOX 4 Traffic Reporter Chip Waggoner is starting to see more and more cars get stuck on icy bridges and overpasses, especially the transition ramps. 

In Garland, on the Interstate 30 transition ramp to the President George Push Turnpike, there's a car that has stopped because it lost traction.

On the Dallas High Five, there's a crash on the eastbound LBJ Freeway ramp at Highway 75 and a car is stalled at the end of the LBJ ramp to southbound 75.

8:10 a.m.

A lot of the residential streets in our northern counties still have snow-covered streets. That's good news if you want to go back outside to continue working on your snowman but bad news if you need to leave home.

7:55 a.m.

Here's a quick look at some of the roadways in North Texas that are still pretty icy.

A recent wreck involving an 18-wheeler on Interstate 35E at Valwood Parkway in Farmers Branch will cause significant delays. All traffic is being detoured to the service road.

Wreckers will have to pull this big rig back onto the roadway, clean up all the debris and clean up a fuel spill.

7:45 a.m.

There are still some icy spots out there, especially on the bridges and overpasses.

Two cars got stuck on the Dallas High Five Interchange on Friday morning during a live interview with a spokesperson for the Texas Department of Transportation.

Kenna Mitchell said TxDOT's crews are still out working this morning.

6:30 a.m.

Just a reminder, all NTTA HOV and Express Lanes remain closed this morning. Here's a good example of why. Crews did not spend time treating those lanes. They will reopen once all the snow and ice melts.

6 a.m.

Here's a look at the condition of some of our major highways as of 6 a.m. 

Traffic Reporter Chip Waggoner said there have been a few minor crashes this morning, but so far there are no major accidents on DFW highways.

TxDOT said its crews are still out clearing the roads.

5:30 a.m.

If you are heading out this morning, you may have trouble on side roads and neighborhood streets. FOX 4 reporter Payton May has spent the morning driving along Highway 75 between Dallas and McKinney. She said that while crews have been doing a good job of keeping the highway clear, some neighborhood streets are a mess.

5 a.m.

FOX 4 Reporter Payton May is driving north on Highway 75 towards McKinney. She said the roadway has ice on the shoulders, but the main lanes are okay because of the treatments and the crews that have been out putting sand on icy spots.

4:40 a.m.

A good example of needing to slow down is this crash on the LBJ Freeway in Garland. The vehicle hit a slick patch and spun out. 

4 a.m.

Traffic maps for early Friday morning show trouble spots and a handful of crashes, mostly caused by people going too fast and hitting an unexpected patch of water or ice.
