Dallas Zoo's baby elephant makes public debut
DALLAS - The Dallas Zoo is ready to let visitors see the baby African elephant that was born in May.
Ajabu will make regular appearances in the zoo’s Giants of the Savana habitat starting Wednesday.
His mother, Mlilo, is one of the elephants rescued from a terrible drought in Swaziland in Africa earlier this year. Her pregnancy was somewhat of a surprise for the zoo.
When Ajabu was born he weighed only 175 pounds, which is small for newborn elephants. The 5-month-old is now 4 feet tall and weighs more than 300 pounds.
Although the zoo has released several videos of him, up until now he has been bonding with his mother in a private habitat.
The staff also needed time to “baby-proof” the public exhibit for him, the zoo said.
