Dicey road conditions in Collin County

Parts of Collin County were in the storm's bullseye. Snow started early, leaving roads slushy for most of the day.

Collin County was one of the hardest hit areas in Thursday's snow storm. Road conditions were poor for most of the day as several inches of snow fell in some areas.

Mavs fans brave wintry weather for Thursday game

In the midst of heavy rain and snow, fans braced the elements to see the Dallas Mavericks play.

Mavericks fans who made their way through the weather to watch the team play on Thursday night were treated to quite a game.

Dallas came back in the fourth quarter to beat the Trail Blazers 117-111.

Hundreds of flights have already been canceled at DFW and Love Field Airport, according to Flight Aware.

DART announced some bus route cancelations.

Route 440 - SMU Mustang Express, the West Dallas Circuit, and the City of Richardson - Galatyn Park Shuttle will not be operating on Thursday and Friday.

Get ready, DFW! The snowstorm is almost here... From timing to totals, here's everything you need to know to stay ahead of the wintry weather today and tomorrow.

7:11 p.m. - Trinity Metro changes for Friday

Trinity Metro announced several changes for riders on Friday, Jan. 10.

  • All Trinity Metro bus routes will operate with ice detours on a Saturday schedule with service slated to begin at approximately 8 a.m. Riders should expect delays and need to plan accordingly. This includes the CentrePort Shuttle (route 30) and TRE LINK (route 31).
  • Express bus routes 61, 63, 65, plus Molly the Trolley and the Burnett Plaza Lunch Line will not operate on Friday.
  • Trinity Metro TEXRail is operating on an adjusted hourly schedule until noon Friday. Service is slated to return to the regular schedule for the balance of daily service at noon.
  • Trinity Railway Express (TRE) will continue operating on its regular weekday schedule, but weather-related delays are possible.
  • Similar to buses, Trinity Metro On-Demand service areas will have a delayed start time of 8 a.m. Friday, too.
  • The customer ticket sales kiosk at Fort Worth Central Station will be open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Friday.

Drivers taking extra precautions on snowy roads

Deteriorating road conditions proved treacherous for some. A FOX 4 crew saw several cars spinning out. One ended up on the shoulder.

Some North Texas drivers found themselves in a precarious situation on Thursday.

We have already seen a decent amount of snow across the area and more is coming.

FOX 4 is forecasting 2 to 4 more inches for most of the Metroplex, with the most coming to the northeast.

Mavs fans braved the weather to attend Thursday night's game against the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Dallas Zoo announced it would extend its closure into Friday.

Zoo officials said they would reach out to anyone who had reserved tickets for Friday by email.

11:45 a.m. - The latest school closings

The list of Friday school closings is growing as winter weather moves into the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Dallas ISD and Fort Worth ISD had already announced they would be closed on Friday, but some districts were waiting until Thursday to decide.

Arlington, Carroll, Grapevine-Colleyville, and Mansfield ISD were among the first major districts to announce Friday closures.

The Federal Aviation Administration has ordered a ground stop at DFW Airport on Thursday due to snow and ice. The agency estimates the stoppage to last until 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Texas Department of Public Safety announced the Plano and McKinney driver's license offices will be closed Thursday because of weather.

The agency said customers with appointments would be notified and able to reschedule their appointments.

10:45 a.m. - Plane de-icing at DFW

An American Airlines flight goes through the de-icing process at DFW on Jan. 9, 2025.

De-icing operations are at full tilt at DFW airport on Thursday morning.

The airport recommends checking on flight statuses before heading to the airport and to allow for extra time to get to the airport.

7:40 a.m. - DFW Radar

FOX 4 Weather Meteorologist Evan Andrews says the storms are here.

There is precipitation on the radar, but temperatures are still hovering just above freezing in most areas. 

On the colorful radar view, the purple areas indicate mostly sleet in the Metroplex.

The more traditional view shows intensity. The areas that are orange and red are areas where we've gotten reports of snow.

7:20 a.m. - Snow in Denton County

Storms with rain, sleet and snow have moved into DFW. FOX 4 viewer Junior Ortiz shared this photo of large snowflakes falling in Denton.

7 a.m. - Driving Conditions

Storms are now starting to move into the Metroplex, bringing rain and sleet. 

Traffic reporter Chip Waggoner said that although road conditions are still mostly fine, at least one car spun out and hit a wall on I-35E in Farmers Branch.

"There are not a lot of folks out and about right now in that location so it's not a huge time delay. But I feel like it serves as a reminder to us all that even though the temperatures are above freezing right now you can still end up skidding out on these wet surfaces," he said.

FOX 4's Paige Ellenberger ran into some sleet while driving to Tarrant County.

6:10 a.m. - Sleet on the Radar

Storms are starting to pop up east of the Metroplex.

FOX 4 Meteorologist Evan Andrews says the radar is brightly colored because the computer is having trouble determining if there’s snow, sleet, or freezing rain falling.

His sources in that area say it’s mostly sleet. 

5 a.m. - Grocery Stores Open Today

As the Metroplex prepares for inclement weather, some grocery stores are adjusting their hours.

Kroger said it currently has no plans to change its hours today or tomorrow but will revisit if the roads get too bad.

Tom Thumb and Albertsons will open at 6 a.m. as usual. However, its stores will close early at 7 p.m.

Walmart and Target have not announced any closings or adjustments.

4:45 a.m. - DART Extends Hours

Dallas Area Rapid Transit is extending its hours at transit centers to provide a warm and safe place for passengers to stay during the winter storm.

The stations will be open from 5 a.m. until 9 p.m.

DART is working to maintain its operations and support riders throughout the storm.

But officials warned riders to expect delays on Thursday and Friday.

DART wants riders to expect delays on Thursday, but it is preparing to have a quick response to the weather to keep buses and trains going.

4:35 a.m. - DFW Road Conditions

For now, the roads are fine. 

FOX 4 Weather Meteorologist Evan Andrews said that with temperatures at or above the freezing mark, he’s thinking roads will likely just be "wet" for most of the day with some slick spots.

That will change tonight after sunset for most people.

That’s when snow should start accumulating and roads may get slippery.

4:15 a.m. - School Closings

School districts across North Texas have already canceled classes for at least on Thursday. Some are closed for the rest of the week.

Those include Dallas ISD, Fort Worth ISD, Irving ISD, Garland ISD, and Richardson ISD.

4:00 a.m. - DFW Flight Delays and Cancelations

The winter storm is already impacting flights at DFW Airport and Dallas Love Field. They have the most flight cancellations of any U.S. airport, according to FlightAware.com.

At the big airport, more than 40% of all flights in and out of the airport are canceled.
