School is out, and the mayor's summer interns are in.
Some Dallas teens are learning that if you're going to do the job, you've got to look the part.
It was a day of transformation for teens in the Mayor's Intern Fellows Program when they went from student to professional.
The group prepped for the first day of their paid eight-week internships and got advice from industry veterans.
“It matters how you dress,” said Ben Nelson, an Alliance Data volunteer. “It matters to any prospective employer, and it matters to the person that you are working with.”
“The fact that they are even choosing to spend their summers this way shows that's what kind of kids they are and what kind of stellar employees they are going to be someday for someone,” said Liz Silva a Paragon Healthcare volunteer.
In addition to getting $20 to shop, the students received an extra 50 percent off their purchase at Donated Goods Discount Depot.
“It really shows that you don’t need to have a lot of money to get clothes for a certain job,” said student Semari Johnson.
And once they feel like they look their best, they can focus on more important things.
“It's really great because it helps us figure out what we want to do in life, what we want to be, and to help us go to college and do more with our lives,” said student Layshon Bowens.
About 400 students are participating in the program and make a minimum of $10 an hour. Training starts this week.
