A suspect was rushed to the hospital after being shot by a Dallas County Sheriff’s Deputy in South Dallas Wednesday night.

The sheriff's office says the suspect was driving his car, reversed in the deputy's direction and ran over his foot. The suspect is expected to be okay and was eventually arrested.

Two Dallas County Sheriff’s Deputies were attempting to serve a warrant on a man in his 40s who was wanted on drug charges when a chase began. It ended with one of the deputies being injured and the suspect shot.

According to a DCSO Spokeswoman Melinda Urbina, it happened around 4:30 p.m. The deputies, who were in uniform and driving a marked cruiser, got a tip that the wanted man was at a nearby fast food restaurant. When the suspect saw the deputies pull into the parking lot, he took off in his car. Investigators say when the suspect got to the intersection of Copeland Avenue and Second Street, he stopped his car. One of the deputies got out of the cruiser in an attempt to stop him. That's when the suspect allegedly put the car in reverse in the direction of the deputy.

“So he did, at one point, run over the deputy's foot. What we don't know if that was before the shots were fired, during it or after. We just know at some point,” Urbina said. “But obviously, he had enough strength to keep the car in reverse, and he ended up wrecking out not even a block later. He actually fled on foot. He got out of the car and fled, and they had to go after him.”

Urbina says the suspect collapsed and was taken into custody. SKY4 video shows the suspect's white, four-door sedan up on a curve. Urbina says it was still in reverse. The suspect was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He'll be transferred to the jail sometime overnight.

Once he's booked into the jail, DCSO says it will release his identity and mug shot. He's being charged with assault on a public servant and evading arrest.

The deputy was treated on scene and is expected to be okay. He will be placed on administrative leave.
