North Texas nonprofit brings chemotherapy patients warm meals
DALLAS - A North Texas nonprofit is working with local restaurants to prepare and donate meals to patients who are undergoing chemotherapy.
The Backstory: Culinary Care was founded by president Courtney Johnson.
In 2006, Johnson's father was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer during her junior year of high school.
During that overwhelming time, friends and family provided meals that relieved her family's worries and allowed them to focus on cherishing moments together.
Johnson was inspired to do the same for others and started the nonprofit.
Since the beginning, several restaurants have teamed up with Culinary Care to provide warm, chef-made meals to bring comfort, hope and strength to those fighting cancer.
What They're Saying: Teretha Johnson, who is currently receiving immunotherapy for Stage 4 gall bladder cancer, was introduced to Culinary Care when she was in the midst of chemotherapy.
Johnson spends hours receiving treatment at Parkland Hospital and says the food she gets from Culinary Care is essential.
"I'm in here for quite some time. The meal is very welcomed, very needed," said Johnson. "Sitting there after 3, 4 hours it's true joy seeing Culinary Care come in an delivering that meal. It's the highlight of that day."
How You Can Help: Culinary Care is always looking for more restaurants to partner with them.
