DALLAS - As the temperatures drop in North Texas, one Dallas church is opening its doors to provide a warm and safe place for people with no other options.
FOX 4 viewers have been sending in video and photos showing what this latest round of winter weather looks like. Sleet fell in Carrollton late Tuesday night and in Downtown Dallas some sleet accumulated on chairs and a few other surfaces.
To help keep people safe from the freezing weather, the Oak Lawn United Methodist Church has welcomed about 50 homeless guests. The church can house up to about 70 people, also serving them hot coffee and breakfast.
Staff members at the church said everyone involved in the community service effort is feeling thankful.
“Gratitude on all sides from volunteers who were able to help and gratitude from our guests that they have a warm spot to stay tonight,” said Sinclair Freeman, the church’s director of outreach.
Oak Lawn United Methodist plans to keep a close eye on the weather. Staff members anticipate being open again Wednesday and Thursday night.
