Search for missing 8-year-old continues, new safety measures coming in Sherman

The search continued for an 8-year-old girl in Sherman who has been missing since a crash on Christmas Eve.

Now, TxDOT is making changes in hopes of preventing future crashes.

The search for Clara Robinson

What We Know: 8-year-old Clara Robinson has been missing since a crash on the morning of Dec. 24.

The Robinson family's SUV crashed into a flooded drainage ditch and was carried to a nearby creek.

Four of the six family members were rescued.

Will Robinson, Clara's father, reportedly died while trying to save his two daughters.

Robinson's body was found two and a half miles downstream from the initial crash site.

His 5-year-old daughter was revived by first responders, but there are no signs of the 8-year-old.

Crews are searching a 10-to-12-mile stretch for the missing girl.

What's Next: The search is expected to resume tomorrow morning.

What's Next: TxDOT says as of Monday it is installing guardrails along the stretch of U.S. 75 where the crash occurred.

Sherman police say that throughout the years, they have seen reports of several vehicles driving into the drainage ditch off U.S. 75.

An online petition for safety barriers along the ditch now has about 12,000 signatures.

"I think it’s something that we all agree now needs to be addressed, and so I’m definitely glad that it’s getting addressed," said Sherman Assistant Police Chief Nic Emmons.

TxDOT tells FOX 4 it will take at least several days to complete the entire stretch. In the meantime, the department is asking drivers to be cautious.

Weather conditions hamper search

Monday's weather led to better search conditions for crew members.

Rain over the past week has changed creek levels, led to debris and more.

"That definitely is a challenge and it’s caused us to have to go over some areas a second or third time," said Emmons.
