Child COVID-19 vaccinations start at south Fort Worth site

North Texas officials are already making adjustments to make it easier for parents to get their kids vaccinated against COVID-19.

Some Fort Worth ISD students aged 5 to 11 are among the first in the district to get the pediatric Pfizer COVID vaccine approved for emergency use authorization earlier this week.

"I was going to feel relief, and I don’t have to worry about getting the coronavirus hard," said student Breanna Gonzalez.

The drive-thru clinic put together by Fort Worth ISD and the city of Fort Worth was held at the district’s Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center.

Parents were grateful for the opportunity.

"It’s like a blessing," said parent Iris Benevidas. "I feel like I won the lottery. The kids getting vaccinated, for me that’s what I was expecting and waiting for."

"Our kids can go to school safely and be around their grandparents," said parent Catherine Parra.

Fort Worth ISD is working with the city’s medical director to accommodate parents and make the process more convenient and accessible for them. That means extending the hours of operation on Tuesdays and Thursdays to 7:30 p.m.

Dallas County kids among 1st in North Texas to get pediatric COVID-19 vaccine

Dallas County began offering the kid-sized dose Wednesday to a handful of students at a clinic held at the county health department.

Dallas ISD Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa says some elementary school students will be able to get the pediatric covid vaccine at school starting next week.

"Yes, significant plans. In fact, we're starting at six elementary schools with the vaccine on Monday," he said.

The plan is to expand into other DISD schools as more vaccines become available.

Dr. Hinojosa says there's light at the end of the tunnel.

"We're also close to lifting this temporary mask protocol. We want to make the right decision so we don't do it too early and create some other issues."
