Blue Ridge baby in trailer killed in Saturday tornado

An EF-0 tornado killed a newborn baby in a mobile home in Blue Ridge on Saturday night.

Neighbor Debralee King said the newborn's father ran to her after the tornado hit with his daughter in his arms, pleading with her to get help for the baby while he went back to save the rest of his family.

The family's mobile home was blown off its foundation and crushed.

"She only had on her onesies thing and I only had on a tee shirt trying to keep her warm," King said.

Another neighbor drove king with the baby to get help and along the way they came up on a game warden who called for an ambulance. King said the baby was still breathing when first responders arrived.

"I kept saying please baby, please baby be okay. I did the best I could, but now I begin to think it wasn't enough. It's just haunting,” King said. The baby died from its injuries in the tornado.

The mother and father were also hurt, but three other children were ok after being freed from the mobile home.

As of Monday evening, a local church was working on providing a new home for the family. The mother remained in the hospital with injuries from the tornado.
