IRVING, Texas - Alison Ramirez-Lopez was found safe in Alabama.
Police issued an Athena Alert Sunday night after the 12-year-old girl went missing on her way to a birthday party in Irving.
What we know:
Alison Ramirez-Lopez, 12, left her home around 10 a.m. to attend a nearby birthday party but never arrived.
She was last seen on Feb. 9 in the 1000 block of Harlan Street.
Before finding the girl, police told the public she may be in Alabama or a surrounding state.
She was located and found safe as of 11 a.m. Monday morning.
What is an Athena Alert?
The Athena Alert was created by Texas lawmakers in 2023 following the disappearance of 7-year-old Athena Strand in Wise County.
Athena disappeared on a Wednesday night, but an Amber Alert wasn’t issued until Thursday afternoon because her case didn’t meet the criteria. The new law allows an Athena Alert to be issued when a child goes missing, but there is no confirmation of an abduction.
The alert can be sent to people within a 100-mile radius of the disappearance.
What we don't know:
- It’s unclear how Alison got to Alabama or the context of her disappearance.
- Authorities have not disclosed how far her friend’s house was from her home.
