Accused Farmers Branch officer resigns from department

FARMERS BRANCH, Texas - The Farmers Branch police officer charged with murdering a teenager has resigned.

Farmers Branch PD Chief Sid Fuller said he accepted the resignation of Ken Johnson on Thursday and it would be effective immediately. Police said they would also continue their investigation into the incident.

Johnson's resignation came the day after he posted his additional bond. Johnson’s bond was raised from $150,000 to $300,000 for two charges – murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Johnson is accused of shootting and killing 16-year-old Jose Cruz and wounding his friend, Edgar Rodriguez. Police said Johnson chased the teens after he spotted them breaking into cars.

Johnson did not go to jail. He was allowed to pay the difference and leave.

His new bond also requires him to surrender his weapons and passport. He is not allowed to contact witnesses and must stay in Dallas County.
