6-year-old shot while mom plans brother's funeral

Dallas police say a 6-year-old girl was killed in a shooting in the Old East Dallas neighborhood. The child's aunt said the mother wasn't home at the time because she was at a funeral home planning services for her 14-year-old son.

On Thursday, police brought in 19-year-old Damariya Sowels as a witness to the shooting.

During the interview, police say he admitted to placing a MAC-10 on top of the PlayStation in the bedroom on the third floor on Tuesday.

After the shooting on Wednesday, investigators say he took the MAC-10, put it in a backpack with a Glock 40 and hid it in the garage of the home.

Sowels was charged with tampering with evidence in connection to the case.

Neighbor Markia Boyd told us her children played with the 6-year-old victim in the past.

"That hurts, because I have a 7-year-old. When I do see them, that's sad," she said.

What appears to be a bullet hole was seen on the third floor of the home between two windows.

Police say there was one other adult in the home along with Sowels.

We are told the victim's mother was not there, and that she was planning a funeral for another one of her children, who was shot days before the new year.

14-year-old Ah'bralen Rider was shot off Harry Hines Boulevard in Oak Lawn and died on New Year's Eve.
