FORT WORTH, Texas - Police tried to stop a wrong-way driver who crashed head-on into another car on Interstate 30 early Friday morning.
Fort Worth police said around 3:30 a.m. they got several calls about a woman going westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-30, coming from Lancaster.
Two officers responded and tried to get the woman’s attention. One officer drove parallel to her car while the other deployed spike strips to try to stop her.
She ultimately struck another car head-on near West Loop 820. Both she and the male driver of the other car were killed in the crash, police said.
“It’s very, very sad. You know, we don’t know if there were any signs of intoxication. All we were trying to do was to get that vehicle stopped so that we could make it safe for everybody. And, you know, it’s very tragic,” said Officer Buddy Calzada with the Fort Worth Police Department.
The woman has since been identified as 28-year-old Vanessa Matlock. The other driver's name has not yet been released.
The interstate was closed for several hours for an investigation.
