Dallas Weather: Oct. 31 morning forecast

FOX 4 Weather Meteorologist Evan Andrews explains what caused those unusual cloud formations in North Texas Monday. Plus, just how cold will it be for Halloween and on Wednesday morning?

You’re going to want to bundle up or wear layers under your costume on Halloween night in North Texas. It will be cold outside for trick-or-treating this year.

According to the FOX 4 Weather team, early Tuesday morning starts out quite cold with wind chills in the 20s.

Sunny skies will eventually warm things up for a cool and pleasant day. Highs will be in the upper 50s.

But a reinforcing shot of cooler air will blow through in the afternoon and winds will kick up to around 20 mph.

Clear skies at sunset mean the temperatures will drop to near 50 for trick-or-treating.

By Wednesday morning, freezing temperatures are expected throughout most of North Texas.

There are Freeze Watches & Warnings in effect through 9 a.m. Wednesday.

How does frost form?

It is going to be chilly in North Texas this week. FOX 4's Ali Turiano explains how frost forms.

If you have plants, you should cover them up.

The Dallas Arboretum normally lets freezes serve as a natural transition to winter, but this time around the freeze threat is so early, it is far too soon to lose the beautiful blooms.

"We are not ready to see all these plants go away, so we are covering all the things that could be hurt by the frost," said Dave Forehand, the Vice President of Gardens at the Dallas Arboretum.

Forehand says you don't have to have professional cloth to protect your plants at home.

"Sheets, towels, blankets work just fine. You do not want to use plastic. Plastic will trap the water underneath and then it will freeze on the plant and cause a lot of damage," he said. "Guys out there, ask your wife which ones you can use before you go start covering."

Not everything needs to be covered.

"People have already planted pansies or dianthus or kale or cabbage, those things you don't have to cover, chrysanthemums. They are in full bloom right now can take a light freeze or frost, it's just those super tender tropical things we enjoy in the summer and the fall," Forehand said.

If you have plants to protect, do so on Monday night because several days of cold are in the forecast.

The Arboretum plans to leave covers on until Thursday.

North Texans prepare for bone-chilling Halloween

From costumes to plants North Texans are doing some extra bundling up ahead of this Halloween's very cold forecast.

Little trick-or-treaters are looking to bundle up for the chilly weather.

Ella is going to customize her Western Barbie outfit.

"Probably get a white flashy coat," she said.

"For so many months we complained about the heat, this is either the penance or the reward," said Seth Denson. "It's Texas, you get every season in one week."

One bright side for parents might be less stamina for collecting candy.

Families prepare for chilly night of trick-or-treating

The early freeze warning has families making adjustments to their Halloween plans. FOX 4's Hanna Battah has details on how some trick-or-treaters are preparing for the cold.

"Cold makes my hands cold, and I can't eat because my hands are super cold," said trick-or-treater Ariyah Padilla.

Brothers Callum and Ian say they will be just fine with their Harry Potter scarves.

"I think it's nice," said Callum.

"Put a jacket underneath," said Ian.
