Reports: SMU to hire Sonny Dykes as new football coach

Former Cal coach Sonny Dykes is set to be SMU’s next football coach, according to multiple reports.

FOX Sports sideline reporter Bruce Feldman reported Monday that Dykes and SMU should finalize a deal by the end of the day.

SMU is searching for a replacement for Chad Morris, who left after three seasons on The Hilltop to take over at Arkansas.

Dykes spent the past season as an offensive analyst at TCU after being fired by Cal after the 2016 season. In four years at Cal and three at Louisiana Tech, Dykes complied a 41-44 record. Dykes is the son of the late ex-Texas Tech coach Spike Dykes.

SMU is in the midst of preps for its first bowl game in half a decade. The Mustangs play Louisiana Tech in the Frisco Bowl on Dec. 20.
