DALLAS - It was a big day for high school athletes as they announced which colleges they’ll attend in the fall on an athletic scholarship.
This was the first year that players could participate in an early signing period and some prospects committed in December. But still, National Signing Day brings a lot of excitement.
West Mesquite High School defensive back Dayven Coleman announced his plans to attend the University of Arizona live on FOX4 on Tuesday night. He was surrounded by family and friends and gave them a lot of the credit.
“They’ve been really supportive. Everybody up here played a role… grades, training and everything,” he said.
John Stephen Jones, the grandson of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, followed in his family’s footsteps by signing with the University of Arkansas. His dad, Stephen, was a linebacker for the team and his grandfather played there too. John Stephen led Highland Park High School to back-to-back state championships.
Meanwhile, Texas Christian University made the unusual move of canceling Coach Gary Patterson’s news conference on Wednesday. The university sent out a news release indicating that many recruits won’t sign until mid to late afternoon. Patterson was named in a lawsuit last week by a former player.
247Sports said Georgia had the top recruiting class in the nation, followed by Ohio State and Texas. National champion Alabama was No. 6.
Oklahoma was ranked ninth overall while Jimbo Fisher's first class at Texas A&M was No. 17.
TCU was ranked No. 25, Baylor No. 29, Oklahoma State No. 33, Texas Tech No. 73, SMU No. 89 and North Texas was No. 100.
