WEATHERFORD, Texas - Counselors will be at Weatherford High School Monday after the weekend death of a student.
Ryan Segar, a 15-year-old freshman, was killed Friday night. Police said he tried to cross Interstate 20 on his bike around 8 p.m. and was hit by a pickup truck.
The driver stopped to help and was not ticketed. Witnesses said it was dark at the time and happened in an area where it would have been hard for the driver to see the bicycle until it was too late.
“This is certainly a tragic accident, and our hearts go out to everyone who was involved and has been impacted by this unfortunate event,” Weatherford police said.
FOX 4 talked to Segar's father and stepmother Monday morning. They described his as a likable teen.
"He made friends really, really easily. He was so nice. He was the kind who would go up to anyone and make them a friend immediately," Kaylee Segar said.
In a statement, Weatherford ISD said it was saddened by the ninth grader's death.
“As an added measure of care, we will have additional counselors available at the Ninth Grade Center on Monday to assist students, staff, and parents with this loss. Above all, our thoughts and prayers are with this student's family, fellow students, and our staff,” the school district said.
Weatherford is west of Fort Worth in Parker County.
