Volunteers have been placing flags of all sizes near the home of an air force captain's parents in Denton County.
Captain Mark Weber was a pararescue team member who would go into tense situations and rescue injured troops. He died earlier this month in a helicopter crash in Iraq. Friends and the community in Denton County are supporting his family in many ways.
The memorial grows with each new U.S. flag at Weber’s parent’s house signaling honor and respect for a young man who died serving his country.
Weber was one of seven U.S. service members killed in a helicopter crash in Iraq. He was a member of the Air Force pararescue team.
"It's a huge loss. We mourn our family, our friends and the loss of their son, but also mourn for a life he had not yet lived. He was only 29 years old,” said family friend Tom Ragsdale. “You know instinctively the help he would have provided, the people he would have saved."
Friends say Captain Weber comes from a family with a long history of military service. His father was an Air Force pilot, and he has two sisters who are current service members.
"Lived his life with distinction and with honor. And it was his innate goodness and Godliness that struck you,” Ragsdale said. “Everything I came away struck with, wow, one of the most impressive human beings I've ever seen”
People driving by acknowledge the memorial they see growing every day.
Johnnie Yellock organized the flag memorial and also served in the Air Force and was wounded in combat. He and others help keep the memorial going, hoping it'll start serious talks with parents and their children.
"What is freedom? What is the price for freedom? What doesn't it mean to serve one another, serve something bigger than yourself?” he said.
A memorial service will be held for Capt. Weber on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Village Church in Highland Village. It is open to anyone who wants to attend.
