The Pentagon spent $22 million investigating unidentified flying objects, according to a report from the New York Times.
The report said that the U.S. Department of Defense ran what is called the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program from 2007 to 2012 – all with the backing of former U.S. Senator Harry Reid.
The program investigated incidents including a 2004 incident of Navy jets chasing down a “whitish oval object” off the coast of San Diego.
In a video, the pilots can be heard saying, “There’s a whole fleet of them.” But the report offers no explanation of what the object turned out to be.
Another incident mentions a Navy Super Hornet following an aircraft that emitted a “glowing aura” while rotating and traveling at a high speed.
The Defense Department said that while the program did end five years ago, it still exists and probes any “episodes” reported by current service members.
Much of what was investigated in the program is still classified.
